Editable example. Replace it with your monthly return count. The returns guide does not publish a return-volume figure to prefill.

Editable estimate. Midpoint of the $3.50–$6.00 3PL standard return processing range on the returns guide. That guide describes the flat per-return fee as covering receiving, inspection, and disposition.

Editable estimate. Starts at $0.00 so it is not added on top of the flat fee. Detailed inspection and grading on the returns guide is $2.00–$5.00 per unit when billed separately.

Editable estimate. Starts at $0.00 because the flat fee already covers disposition. Itemized putaway on the returns guide is $0.75–$2.00 per unit. Refurbishment and repackaging is $3.00–$10.00 per unit. Applied only to the resaleable share.

Editable estimate. Midpoint of the $3.00–$8.00 return label range on the returns guide. The guide's all-in freight layer, including line haul and consolidation, is $8.00–$12.00.

Editable estimate. Midpoint of the $0.50–$3.00 3PL disposal and recycling range on the returns guide. Applied only to the share that is liquidated or disposed. The guide's other disposal line is $0.50–$2.00.

Editable estimate. 80% is the midpoint of the 75–85% apparel restock rate on the returns guide. Other categories on that guide are lower. The rest of the volume is treated as liquidated or disposed.

Editable example. $22.00 is the apparel retail value in the returns guide's worked example. It is not a catalog-wide figure.

Editable estimate. 80% is the recovery rate in that worked example. The returns guide says returned items sell for 15–40% less, a 60–85% recovery rate.

Editable estimate. Midpoint of the $2.00–$4.00 depreciation and holding range on the returns guide. That is capital tied up during the returns cycle, separate from the resale markdown.

Your assumption. Starts at $0.00. The returns guide says disposal recovery is minimal and does not publish a dollar recovery.

Handling subtotal $10.60. The returns guide quotes $5.00–$15.00 per item for processing, and $5.00–$8.50 as a competitive band for standard ecommerce items.

Recovered value on a resaleable unit is $17.60, which is $4.00 above the cash cost. The returns guide says to take the physical return in that case.

Every fee you enter is added. If a 3PL quote is one flat processing fee, leave inspection and restock at $0.00. Lost value on resaleable units is item value times the share that is not recovered. Lost value on liquidated or disposed units is item value minus the recovery dollars you enter. Published ranges are from the returns processing costs guide. Defaults are editable estimates.

How this estimate is built

Cash cost per return adds the 3PL processing fee, any inspection or grading fee, the return label, depreciation and holding, restock or repackaging on the resaleable share, and the disposal fee on the share that is liquidated or disposed. Monthly cost multiplies that cash cost by your return count. Annual cost multiplies the monthly cost by 12.

All-in cost adds lost merchandise value. A resaleable unit loses the share of its value that is not recovered. A liquidated or disposed unit loses its value minus the recovery dollars you enter. The returns guide says to take the physical return only when item value times the expected recovery rate is greater than the cost of processing the return.

Every fee you enter is added. If a 3PL quote is one flat processing fee, leave inspection and restock at $0.00.

The guide's $17.00–$29.00 all-in total is a different stack: reverse freight $8.00–$12.00, restocking labor $5.00–$8.00, depreciation and holding $2.00–$4.00, and customer service $2.00–$5.00. The guide maps the 3PL handling fee to the restocking-labor layer, so do not add that stack on top of a flat fee that already covers the same work.

Customer service labor of $2.00–$5.00 per return is part of the guide's $17.00–$29.00 all-in stack and is not added here. Type it into a fee field if you want it in the total.

The handling comparison uses $5.00–$15.00 per item, which the returns processing costs guide treats as the processing quote. The guide's all-in figure before write-down is $17.00–$29.00. Those bands are context for the numbers you enter. They are not a second result.
